  • What is a Pre-Emergent Herbicide?
Pre-emergent herbicides are spreadable granular or sprayable liquid chemicals that form a barrier just below the soil surface and prevent cell division in seedlings. This effectively stops weeds from ever sprouting in your lawn. They don't affect mature grass or plants. Some pre-emergents like Mesotrione are specially formulated to be used at the time of grass seeding but will block future weed growth. Mesotrione has the added benefit of providing some post-emergent control of mature weeds. Prodiamine is one of the longest-lasting and most effective pre-emergents and what we recommend right after planting buffalograss plugs. It allows the buffalograss to establish without competition. Pre-emergents are generally applied in the Spring (March-May) before soil temperatures reach 55 degrees and weeds begin to germinate.
  • What if I don't have a sprinkler system?
No problem. While it will require more effort to keep your grass plugs moist during their establishment period, you ultimately don't need a traditional sprinkler system; occasional waterings of 1/4 - 1 inch of water every 2-4 weeks will suffice. While establishing your plugs, it may be easier to deploy an above-ground setup. I would recommend you watch Youtuber Ryan Knorr's how to video on above-ground setups. He provides a lot of detail on what products to buy with the most important being the threaded spike that traditional sprinkler heads can screw into (several options below). https://amzn.to/3sF4bop https://amzn.to/3LBPbQU https://amzn.to/3rPmDex https://amzn.to/3sHfUmb https://amzn.to/3JxMBt0
  • What about Bermuda grass?
The Dog Tuffâ„¢ grass we recommend is technically a type of bermuda grass, not buffalo grass. You might be wondering, "why not just choose another variety of bermuda grass available from retailers?" The reason is because most bermuda grass cultivars are incredibly invasive and difficult to kill. Dog Tuffâ„¢ is sterile and will not spread beyond its stolons. It is also much easier to kill with typical herbicides. It simply offers the best traits of both bermuda and buffalo grasses.
